Oban Lorne Rugby 7s Report

KSOB Team for the Oban Lorne 7s (May 2011)

The picture above has the Keil School Old Boys team for the Oban Lorne 7’s.  Back Row (L to R) Gordon McNeil (82), Toby Wilson, David Dailly (98), Alex Royle, Allan Thomson (95).  Front Row (L to R) Fergus MacDonald (95), Scott Thomson (97), Finlay MacCuish (98), Gareth Duguid (98).

In March the club received an email message from David Grier (95) to ask if we would be interested in fielding a team in the annual Oban Lorne RFC Seven’s tournament.  The club put out the word and within days we had replies from enough Keil Old Boys to put together a 7s team.  The team can be seen in the photo above and includes two friends of Keil, Alex Royle and Toby Wilson.  Club President Jim MacFarlane was on the original team sheet but had to drop out with a knee injury.

Leslie Currie (85) managed to dig out the old strips and found that 8 had survived the ravages of time and hungry moths.  The pink tinge around the collars is reputed to date from when the strips were first washed with a nice red tracksuit !

The Old Boys gathered at the Oban club in Glencruitten in time for the 12 O’Clock draw.  Keil were in group C and faced opposition from Panmure (from Dundee), Oban Old Boys and the Minerva Builders.  This sounded like a reasonable draw until we discovered that Minerva was actually the  Glasgow Hawks !

The first game against Panmure started badly with the Dundee mob taking two tries.  However Keil stepped up to the plate with a bruising run from Finlay McCuish resulting in a try.  Inspired run from Scott Thomson gave the second try of the day and then Gordon McNeil spotted his chance and gave Keil the third try of the game.  Gordon is the only KSOB to have played for Keil in 5 different decades and the team were delighted to see him score.

Finlay MacCuish gives Keil their first try of the day.

Having not found time to practice drop kicking Keil failed to make the most of the conversions.  The extreme heat and the age difference also took its toll and the match ended Panmure 45 v KSOB 17

Second game versus Minerva Builders (aka Glasgow Hawks !) was a bruising affair.  The Keil Boys battled hard but were unable to get the better of this semi-professional team.  The boys put in some good runs but suffered many crunching tackles.  Credit to Alex Royle and Fergus MacDonald for standing their ground in the face of adversity.  Toby Wilson also left with a nice battle scar!  Final score Minerva 66 v KSOB 0.  Minerva went on to win the competition.

The third and our final game was against Oban Old Boys.  This game was played on Obans main pitch in front of the club house.  Oban Old Boys put up stiff resistance.  KSOB got two tries with the highlight being a great run from Scott Thomson (97) who looked set to score but had to pass back near the line.  Keil controlled it well finally getting the ball to David Dailly (98) who battled through the Oban Old Boys to score the final try of the game.  Final Score Oban Old Boys 21 v KSOB 10.

After Keil were knocked out the competition the boys watched another old boy Euan Wilson (1999) who was playing for Oban Exiles.  Euan had a great game and a few tries.  We were also pleased to enjoy the support of our partners and we were joined by David Grier (95) and Catriona Spicer (98).

We had hoped to meet Dee Bradbury President of Oban Lorne RFC and one of  the first Keil School girl pupils but she was still on holiday.

At the post tournament drinks everyone agreed they had enjoyed the day.  There was a great deal of enthusiasm for similar rugby ventures in the future.  If anyone is interested in playing for Keil then please contact the KSOB Club via your usual channels, this website, our social networking on facebook and twitter or via the email address .

Big thank you to Oban Lorne RFC for inviting Keil to participate in this great event.

Oban Lorne Rugby 7’s

We received an email from Keil School Old Boy, David Grier (95) to ask if the Club would be interested in fielding a team at the Oban Lorne Rugby 7’s.

The event takes place on Saturday 7th May 2011 (kick off 12:00) at Glencruitten, Oban.   The following teams have already confirmed: Oban A, Oban B, Oban U-19’s, Oban Exiles, Edinburgh Accies, Cartha, Minerva Builders, Tech Tigers.

Its quite short notice and its likely we would struggle to find the required number of fit and able players….but…  if anyone is interested can you contact us (ASAP) via this website or

If we cant field a team we would of course still encourage you to go along and support the day.  You can expect the usual West Highland hospitality and a cracking day of rugby. BBQ, bar and musical entertainment.
