Bill Baker has recently died in South Africa, after a distinguished career
in education.
Forced to leave the dark continent in the late 1980s Bill was snapped
up by the headmaster of Keil, Chris Tongue. This was an inspired appointment
as Bill brought invaluable experience and ability to the posts of Head
of History and Director of Studies. At the same time his wife Kate taught
PE and became the first Housemistress of Girls. Both Bakers made major
contributions to the extracurricular programme at Keil, even though my
strongest memory is of Bill making fun of the michelin man style clothing
required to coach the never ever cancelled rugby practises.
The family left Keil in 1990 when Bill accepted a headship in Peru.
Kate passed on the sad news of the untimely but not unexpected death
of her husband to Keil's former bursar and governor, Bob Skinner. Kate
will remain in South Africa and is at present resisting the temptation
to permanently join her 2 daughters in Manchester.
